Biography
Deborah is the First Nations, Metis and Inuit Education Teacher/Coordinator, working in that capacity for 21years. She is a member of the Saddle Lake First Nation(Alberta) and grew up in central Alberta. Deborah received her Bachelor of Education from the University of Lethbridge, majoring in Social Studies and specializing in Aboriginal Education. Deborah co-founded History in the Hills program with Dr. Gerald Oetalaar of the University of Alberta Archeology Department. Deborah is currently an ATA Association Instructor on Aboriginal Education; was recently appointed to the “Dialogue With Albertan’s” Steering Committee by the Honorable Minister Dave Hancock; is a member of the Art’s in Education Focus Group with Alberta Education; is a member of the Olympic Torch Relay Task Force with the city of Medicine Hat; is a member of the Medicine Hat Food Bank Board and reviews resources for approval for use in Alberta schools.
Deborah has worked with community to develop services for Aboriginal peoples developing Metis Nation Local #8 and 89 and has worked provincially with First Nations, Metis and Inuit groups. She was a co-founder of the Miywasin Society and served as chair of the Miywasin board until September 08. Deborah served as Co-chair of the Region 2 Steering Committee to restructure Child Welfare; sat on various committees (Standards, Workload Standards and Early Intervention Committees); she served as Co-chair on the SEACFS Board for Region 2 where she was Chair of the Aboriginal Advisory Committee to the Minister of Children’s Services. Deborah also served on the Medicine Hat Community Foundation Board, the Saamis Tepee Board and was Chair of the story board committee selecting all the artists. Deborah served on the AADAC board and as the last Acting Chair of the AADAC Board.
